In An Instant…

I bought my first FujiFilm Instax camera in 2016. I was getting ready to attend my 15th (and last) Burning Man festival in Nevada, USA. After photographing the Burn for many years, I wanted to give back to the people of Black Rock City. Little did I know that less than one year later, I would be living in Phuket, Thailand.

When I came here, I bought a FujiFilm “Instax” Mini Evo instant camera. I found that it came in handy for breaking the ice when meeting new people. The picture quality in much worse that pretty much any phone. But, the Instax prints had something a phone couldn’t provide: immediacy. You can hold it in your hands and watch the picture magically develop. Later, I learned how to print photos that weren’t taken with the Instax camera. I started mounting them in lucite frames, which give a great tactile feel when holding the pictures.

My inital thought was to make and sell the prints online, but that didn’t really didn’t take off. The finished prints lanquised in a box until recently.

I have decided to just give the pictures away to friends and to strangers.

About “In An Instant” prints

The pictures are printed on FujiFilm Instax film using a process similar to a Polaroid picture.

The source of the image maybe an instant camera, a phone or a full-sized camera. However, the decidedly analog nature of the Instax printing process lends a unique character to each print. No two prints are exactly the same.

Images from the Instax mini Evo may have special effects, such as mirroring. These effects are generated in camera, not using software later.

The print is mounted between two “frames” of clear acrylic plastic, allowing easy viewing of the front or back of the image. The frame is held together by four pairs small magnets in the corners of the frame. Additionally, clear tape is applied around the edges to seal the frame. The mount measures 13 x 9.5 x 2 cm. The size, weight and feel of the mounted print makes it pleasant to hold and examine.

On the back of the print, is a label indicating the image’s title, capture date and location, my inital signature and a QR code for my Instagram or to my website.

These items are not mass-produced. Each one is shot, printed, mounted and shipped (From Thailand, for God’s sake!) by me.

I hope you enjoy them!
